FORCE, MOTION, and Energy REVIEW 2nd Six Weeks CBA Review
2
What is Friction? Friction is when two surfaces rub against each other
It causes things to slow down or stop.
3
What are things that could increase friction? (slow objects down)
Rough surface Dry surface Level surface
4
What are things that could decrease friction? (Speed Objects up)
Smooth surface Wet surface Inclined surface
5
What does the force of magnetism do?
Causes a push or pull between the poles of magnets
6
What is gravity? The force that pulls objects down towards the Earth
7
What is inertia? The force that makes a body in motion stay in motion.
The force that makes a body at rest, stay at rest.
8
What is a trial? A single completed investigation Trial 1 Trial 2
9
Why do you conduct several trials?
To see if you get the same results To make sure you your conclusion and/or results are valid
10
Tool Review 1. Balance 2. Graduated Cylinder 3. Meter stick 4. Spring scale 5. Beaker 6. Hot Plate 7. Thermometer 1. Mass 2. Volume 3. Distance 4. Weight or Force 5. Volume 6. Add Heat 7. Temperature

Distance Blown by the fan (centimeters)
Veronica was trying to determine how the surface a toy car rolls on would affect the distance it rolls. She set a fan on low and placed the car on grass and then she placed it on a wooden floor. The table below shows the data she collected. Type of Surface Distance Blown by the fan (centimeters) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Average Grass 5.3 5.7 5.5 Wooden 9.8 9.7 9.9 What is the variable?

14
Remember!!!!!! How does the Variable affect the Measurement?
15
What are the 5 types of energy?
Mechanical Electrical Light Thermal Sound
16
What does reflect mean? The bouncing of light
Remember that light reflects (bounces) off of mirrors Tools: mirrors and smooth shiny surfaces
17
What does refract mean? The bending of light
Remember that light refracts (bends) Tools: lens or other objects light can go through
18
What does a light ray that is reflected look like?
19
What does a light ray that is refracted look like?
20
What is sound? The vibration of molecules
Matter must be present for there to be sound
21
What is the difference between a conductor and an insulator?
Conductors allows energy to flow through easily (like metals) Insulators prevent energy from flowing through easily (like cloth)
22
What is the difference between an open and a closed circuit?
Open circuit will NOT work Closed circuit will work
23
What are the three things a circuit must have in order to work?
Power source (Ex: battery) Conductor (Ex: wire) Load: Something to use the electricity (Ex: lamp) Something using electricity Power Source Conductor
24
What happens in a Series circuit if one light bulb goes out?
They all go out
25
What happens in a parallel circuit if one light bulb goes out?
Some stay on
26
What is thermal energy? Heat energy Example: heat from the sun
27
What is Mechanical Energy?
Moving energy Example: roller coaster
28
Remember that objects can give off more than one type of energy.
Fires give off light energy and thermal energy.
29
Miscellaneous words you should know
Bike Reflector: Geyser: Solar:
