2 What We Will Be Doing today
Examining the Thinking Log as one tool for learning in this course Practicing how to use the Thinking Log with real world context Examining & Practicing how to navigate our course website Reviewing the Guidelines for Online Publishing & Blogging Looking at next week calendar

3 Thinking Logs Before we can move forward with the skills we need to develop, there needs to be a way to keep track of WHAT we’re thinking & more importantly HOW we’re thinking Since a large component of the class revolves around READING, WRITING, SPEAKING, & VOCABULARY… Our Starting point is that…let me show what I mean

5 Four Parts to the Thinking Log
First we will break down the four parts to the Thinking Log Evidence from Text/Concepts Analysis (notes, thoughts, wondering etc) Questions/Disagreements/Class Discussions Summary of Concepts & Conclusions *Notes about Thinking Logs: You will be using these to keep track of your thinking every week Each thinking log will be due at end of the week (Thur periods 1&2; Friday periods 6 & 7) Each log is worth 10 points- 15 per semester- total of 150 points

6 Practice Thinking Logs
We are going to watch a video about an issue that is going on in the world As you watch, in your Thinking Log write down what you observe BUT, also on the “QUESTIONS” side of your log- ask yourself these questions: What are the issues (problems)? What are the causes? How can this affect others? Syrian Refugees

Get the breakdown of the week Documents/Resources Turn in assignments Participate in online discussions This is your lifeline for the course! Here is an example of what it will look like: Let’s go over the basics right now.

8 Guidelines for Online Publishing & Blogging
Let’s take a look at some guidelines for behavior for online publishing and blogging Take the next 3 mins- individually to read the guidelines Take 2 mins to have a SW partner check in conversation about the guidelines Bringing out to the floor for discussion and clarifications

9 From Log to Blog… So now that you know how you’ll be keeping track of your thinking… A Large component (part) of this course is TALKING What’s the main difference between other mammals, insects, and animals and humans? Once you’ve thought in your logs… Then you’ll BLOG online to continue the dialogue we’ve had in class… an example… Sample Blog

10 Questions about the Thinking Logs & Blogs?
Now, to recap, summarize, and next steps… We all know the mechanics of the class? (Rules, procedures, & consequences) We’ve created the expectations we will all follow all year long? You’ve received training on the course website as well as guidelines for online publishing and blogging We now are ready to start our work… FIRST DAY OF Gov/Econ is Tuesday 8/23 & Wednesday 8/24
