Living things and the environment
1.1 Living things and the environment
2
Activity (teacher prints individual nature picture)
Look at the picture Use colored pencil to draw arrows to living things and name them Use colored pencil to draw arrows to non-living things and name them Class discussion: How do living things in picture depend on non-living things????
3
WHAT is HABITAT? Habitat - is an environment that provides the things (food, water, home) for an organism to live, grow and reproduce.
4
Habitat Different organisms live in different habitats
Why? Because different organisms have different needs For example, snakes like hot temperature, so they like deserts
5
Match the organism to its habitat
6
Environment Abiotic factor: Biotic factor: living non-living things
(ex. rocks, soil, water) Biotic factor: living things (ex. horse, worm, trees)
7
BIOTIC FACTORS page 7 Other examples of biotic factors:

LEVELS of ORGANIZATION
Organism Populations Communities Ecosystems
16
WHAT IS AN ORGANISM? Organism – is an single living thing.
17
What is POPULATION? Population- is all the members of the same animals or plants that are in a specific area.
18
What is SPECIES? Species - is a group of organisms that are similar and can mate with each other and produce viable offspring (is a part of population).
19
WHAT IS COMMUNITY? Community – is all the different populations that live together in an area
20
WHAT IS ECOSYSTEM? Ecosystem- is an area in which living and non-living parts interact with each other.
21
LEVEL OF ORGANIZATION- review
Organism (a single living thing) Population Community Ecosystem
22
WHAT IS ECOLOGY???? Ecology- is the study of how living things interact with each other and with the environment (a part of science).
23
SCIENCE Biology Chemistry Physics Astronomy Ecology
24
Review: matching Organism __how living things interact with their environment Habitat __different populations living together Biotic factor __can breed with each other. Similar to each other Abiotic factor __non-living thing, i.e. rocks Photosynthesis __home, where species live Species __animals or plants, i.e. tiger Population __living thing, i.e. fish Community __plants make food using the sun Ecosystem __same species living together Ecology __place where organisms live, i.e. desert
25
REVIEW 1.1: What is habitat?
26
Why do different organisms live in different habitats?
27
How do abiotic factors differ from biotic factors?
28
What are levels of organization?
29
What is community?
30
Assessment 1 page 10 1a. What basic needs are provided by an organism’s habitat? 1b. What might happen to an organism if its habitat could not meet one of its needs? 2a. Define the terms biotic and abiotic factors. 3b. List all the biotic and abiotic factors in Figure 4.
31
Assessment 1 page 10 2c. Explain why water and sunlight are two abiotic factors that are important to most organisms. 3a. List these terms in order from the smallest level to the largest: population, organism, ecosystem, community. 3b. Would all the different kinds of organisms in a forest be considered a population or a community? Explain. 3c. How might a change in one population affect other populations in a community?
