1 Prokaryotes What are the similarities and differences between Archaea and Bacteria?

2 Oxygen Requirements Prokaryotes can be grouped based on their need for oxygen Obligate anaerobe – poisoned by oxygen Obligate aerobe – require oxygen Facultative aerobe – can survive with or without oxygen

3 Other Structural Features
Bacteria Archaea Shape DNA Movement Other Structural Features Cell Walls Bacilli – rod shaped Spirilla – spiral shaped Cocci – spherical shaped Many different shapes In form of a circle; may contain plasmids Glide or use flagella Pili to stick to surfaces and other prokaryotes Have peptidoglycan (turns purple with Gram stain) Do not have peptidoglycan (turns pink with Gram stain)

4 Adaptations for Survival
Gene Exchange Most reproduce asexually, but occasionally conjugation can occur Allows for genetic diversity Endospore formation Thick wall that prevents drying out or being broken down
