Observe the pictures below and identify the type of joint shown. Ball-and-Socket Gliding Hinge

2 Body System Goals: I can describe the relationship between cells, tissues, organs, and organ systems. I can identify the major organs of different body systems. I can describe the functions of different organ systems. I can explain the importance of maintaining homeostasis. What is the simplest level of organization within the human body? Which body system does the stomach belong? What body system provides support and protection to the body, stores minerals, and produces blood cells?

3 The Muscular System Body Systems

4 Today’s Goals… I can explain the functions of the muscular and integumentary systems. I can list the different types of muscle tissue. I can describe the differences between involuntary and voluntary muscles.

5 Gross Motor vs. Fine Motor
The Muscle Test: Gross Motor vs. Fine Motor Gross Motor—Count the number of times you can dribble the ball in the given amount of time. Fine Motor—Count the number of twirls you can make with your pencil between your thumb and middle finger.

6 The Muscular System Muscular System—provides movement and flexibility

7 The Muscular System Types of Muscles: Smooth—digestive tract
Cardiac—heart Skeletal—attached to bones and protects organs

8 Muscle Action: Involuntary Voluntary You don’t control this
You control this Skeletal Ex: Flexing your muscles; bending your leg Smooth and Cardiac muscles Sometimes skeletal Ex: Heart, Digestive tract

9 Muscles Work in Pairs… Biceps: Flexor (bends) Triceps: Extensor (straightens)

10 Tendons and Ligaments:

11 Types of Muscle Tissue:
Fill out the chart as you collect information. Muscle Type: FACTS EVIDENCE SMOOTH CARDIAC SKELETAL

12 Which type of muscle is most important?
There are passages around the room about the three different types of muscle. Walk to the different passages around the room. Read the passages to gather your evidence for each type of muscle tissue. Complete the chart as you go. Be sure to write down facts AND cite where you found the evidence.
