1 Chapter 4 Lesson 1 States of matter
How do you describe a solid? How do you describe a liquid? How do you describe a gas?

2 SOLID GAS LIQUID

3 SOLID GAS LIQUID Definite Shape Definite Volume Indefinite Shape
Indefinite Volume

4 Solid

5 Solid Particles are tightly packed Vibrate in place 2 types
Crystalline –regular, repeating patterns Amorphous – irregular pattern

6 Solid

7 Liquid

8 Liquid Fluid – substance that flows Takes the shape of container
Particles are free to move

9 Liquid Surface Tension
Molecules attract one another and pull together into a ball

10 Liquid Viscosity High Viscosity = SLOW Low Viscosity = FAST
Liquids resistance to flowing High Viscosity = SLOW Low Viscosity = FAST

11 Gas

12 Gas Volume Pressure Temperature
-Gas volume is the same as the container -Particles colliding - Measure of average energy of motion - Particles fill empty space - Increase in particles means increase of collisions, which means increase in pressure. - High temp. = fast particles -Keep spreading until whole container is filled Pressure = Force/Area
