2 Where should you be now? Have revised each AOS and re-read/watched all the texts studied. Be writing practice tasks and completing them close to time (<65 minutes) Be identifying weaknesses in your writing and working on how to address them.

3 Focus for Today Using Exam time to its fullest
Utilising your vocabulary Expecting the Unexpected

4 Exam Timing Approx 65 minutes per task, with 5 minutes non-writing.
With planning and proofing, that is approx 45 minutes to get your piece written. Do not underestimate the importance of proofing.

5 Practise #1 – minutes Select one of the following questions and write a plan detailing your response. TWDSC ‘In times of stress, people will always get what they deserve.’ Do you agree? ‘There is no hope for people who cannot independent’ Discuss. On the Waterfront Discuss the importance of Father Barry in saving the men of the waterfront. How does ‘On the Waterfront’ show the importance of seeking justice?

6 Where did you get to? Read the questions
Analyse each one, determining ‘what is this question really asking me to write?’ Select the question that you think you can do the best on. Plan your contention Plan the key points that will form the basis of your paragraphs. Plan your topic sentences to begin each paragraph Dot point the ideas to be discussed within each paragraph. Select the evidence that you need for each paragraph to support your arguments.

7 Practice Task #2 Encountering Conflict
“People never expect the consequences of their conflicts.” Draw on one of the following texts: The Quiet American The Rugmaker of Mazar-e-Sharif

8 Where did you get to? Analysed the prompt to see the ideas of conflict it engages. Consider the ideas present within the texts and how the engage with the prompt. Consider other examples of conflict and how they are relevant to the prompt. Develop the concept of your piece. Determine the purpose of your piece. Select a style, structure, audience and voice for your piece. Dot point the major ideas of your piece, depending on the style you have chosen Narrative – Orientation, Complication, Resolution; characters; setting Essay – contention, key points, examples Feature article – major ideas, persona of author, necessary ideas, overall plan and structure. Persuasive – contention, major arguments, techniques, evidence

9 Vocabulary!!! The following words are often overused. Think of other words that are more descriptive; Shows Says Persuades The following words are never to be used at the start of a sentence. However, there are other words that can be used that have similar meaning (such as however). Think of what words could be used instead of these; But And Because

10 Expecting the Unexpected
You sit down in the exam, confident and ready to go. You are prepared for anything. The doors close, you get comfortable. The examiner starts the clock. You open up the paper and see the following questions…

11 Things We Didn’t See Coming
“The women in TWDSC are depicted as the cause of all the narrator’s problems.” Discuss. How does the environment reflect the narrator’s state of mind throughout TWDSC? On the Waterfront “Terry is solely responsible for Joey, KO and Charley’s death.” Do you agree? How significant are the pigeons in demonstrating the benefits of ignorance for the men of the waterfront?

12 DON’T PANIC! If faced with 4 questions that you are unsure of, just ensure that you analyse them carefully before selecting which one to write on. Ask yourself ‘Can I write enough?’ for the questions. A ‘Discuss’ question gives you more scope than a ‘Do you agree?’ question. Remember, if you know the text and follow the proper process, you are giving yourself every chance of doing well.
