Today we will: Locate areas where European nations established colonies Illustrate the consequences of European imperialism Respond to historical thinking inquiries Think critically about why European nations established colonies in certain locations. Draw conclusions about some colonies.

This is a map of the Americas (the New World) at the height of European Imperialism. Why do you think there were so many different countries with colonies in these areas? Did you consider: The Northwest Passage Competition for resources Increase in power Competition between nations New opportunities

Year 9 History European Imperialism Write down anything in GREEN. Imperialism – the act of growing an empire – was extremely important to European politics between 1400 and Several powerful nations sent explorers out to find new areas to claim. In places around the world, such as the Americas, Australia, Africa and Asia, explorers began to set up colonies. The new colonies would be similar to the nations who claimed them: their language, culture, laws and systems of government would be used. The European countries earned a great deal of money and power by establishing colonies, and selling new resources and products. Britain’s empire grew massively, spreading her influence around the globe.

Group Task In groups of 4 or 5, you will research about the empire building of some major European empires. You must fill in a chart about their motives behind imperialism and the consequences of building up their empire. Then, your group will share the information with the rest of the class so everyone has a completed chart.
