3. Chronology is another word for historical sequence
Chronology is another word for historical sequence. “What does that mean?”
That means when history writers put events into chronological order, they are placing those events in the order in which they happened.
*Think, pair, share- What might history writers use to put events in chronological order? Identify an example and non-example of chronological order? Explain why each example is or is not and example chronological order?

4. Listing a series of events in chronological order, is not enough
Listing a series of events in chronological order, is not enough. It only tells the reader what happened.
If you want to inform (teach) the reader about history, the author should also tell WHY something happened.

5. Here is one example:
Yellowstone was our country’s first national park. Congress passed a bill creating it in Then, Congress opened more parks in other areas of our country. People saw that an agency was needed to run the park system. The National Park Service was created in 1916.
The paragraph tells the events that led up to the creation of the National Park Service. (Can you help me underline these events?)
The events are in chronological order. (What are the clues that tell you this? Can you help me circle them?)
The paragraph also tells you why the National Park Service was needed. (Can you help me box the sentence that tells us why?)

Events in a science text are also related to each other in a similar way.

7. Let’s read this science text together.
Green plants make their own food using a process called photosynthesis. First, plants take in sunlight. Plants use the energy from the sun to break down the water and carbon dioxide. The plant also takes in water from the soil and carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use the sugar as food. Finally, they release the oxygen into the air.
*Think, pair, share-Sound confusing? It should. Why does it not make sense? Can you help identify the process and sequence the steps so the paragraph makes sense?

8. The steps in the process are out of order and the sequence needs to be fixed in order for the text to make sense.
The plant needs to take in water and carbon dioxide BEFORE it can break them down.
If you see the word FINALLY, what does it mean? What about words like FIRST, NEXT, THEN? How can these time order words help you?
Work with a partner to put the sentences in the paragraph in the correct sequence.
