The Colors of Poetry Practicing Parts of Speech

2 Colorful Topics Choose a topic. It can be an emotion, a holiday, a season, or an idea. Brainstorm colors that represent your chosen topic. Narrow your list to three colors. (green, red, and white)

3 Colorful Nouns Choose three nouns per color that represent your chosen topic. Example of first color only: Christmas is green wreathes, mistletoe, and trees. Repeat step for the other two colors.

4 Accurate Adjectives Now select accurate adjectives to describe your nouns. Example: Christmas is green rotund wreathes, fresh mistletoe, and prickly pine trees. Repeat step for the other two stanzas.

5 Vivacious Verbs Choose vivacious verbs that demonstrate the action. Using the present progressive tense makes your poem more exciting. Example: Christmas is green rotund wreathes hanging fresh mistletoe dangling and prickly pine trees swaying Repeat step for the other two stanzas.

6 Plausible Prepositional Phrases
Now create the setting for the action by writing prepositional phrases that show where the action is taking place. Example: Christmas is green rotund wreathes hanging on my door, fresh mistletoe dangling overhead, and prickly pine trees swaying in the forest. Repeat step for the other two stanzas.

7 Boredom Busters Now check your poem for word choice. Make sure that you haven’t used the same words repeatedly. . . BORING! Make any necessary corrections. Read your poem aloud. Listen to the flow and rhythm of your poem. Adjust words or phrases if needed.

8 Perfect Publishing It is now time to publish your poem. Choose whatever method you want to present your poem (word processing, an artistic journal page, etc.). Share your poem with the class!
