What is a force? Push or pull on an object.
When an object exerts a push or pull on something else then one object exerts a force on the second object. Like velocity force is described by it's strength and direction.

How do you measure force?
Newtons. Direction and strength are represented by arrows. Combination of forces are called a NET force. The net force determines whether an object moves or not.

Force and Direction

Unbalanced vs. balanced force
Can cause an object to start moving, stop moving or changes direction. Result in a net force and cause a change in the object's motion. Balanced Do not change the object's motion. Equal force in opposite directions.

Applied Force Force that is applied to an object by a person or another object.

Applied Force Force that is applied to an object by a person or another object.

Frictional Force The force that one surface exerts on another when the two surfaces rub together.

Frictional Force The force that one surface exerts on another when the two surfaces rub together.

Gravitational force The force that pulls objects toward each other.

Gravitational force The force that pulls objects toward each other.

Tension Force Magnitude of the pulling force exerted by a string, cable, chain or similar object on another object.

Tension Force Magnitude of the pulling force exerted by a string, cable, chain or similar object on another object.

Air resistance force Fluid friction experienced by objects moving through air.

Air resistance force Fluid friction experienced by objects moving through air.

Spring force Force exerted by a compressed or stretched spring upon an object that comes in contact with it.

Spring force Force exerted by a compressed or stretched spring upon an object that comes in contact with it.

Goal  Students will identify and describe the types of forces acting on an object, including: Frictional force Gravitational force Tension force Air resistance force Applied force Spring Force
