Vocabulary society – a group of people sharing a culture
social structure – a pattern of organized relationships among groups of people within a society social class – a grouping of people based on rank or status nuclear family – a mother, a father, and their children extended family – a family that includes several generations

How Society Is Organized
food Community safety education government A society can be as small as a single community or as large as a nation or even a group of nations Small groups work for one common cause The family is the basic, most important social unit of any society

Social Classes Social class might be determined by wealth, land, ancestor’s, or education In the past it was very difficult for some to move up in society, but today things like education, a good job, or marrying someone of higher status lets people move up in society

Kinds of Families The nuclear family takes its name from the word nucleus, which means center, and is more common in developed countries. Extended families often have generations of a family all under one roof and exist more in developing countries.

Language Language provides a basis for culture
It reflects the things that are important to a culture Some countries speak more than one language Each person who speaks a different language is culturally different from one another

Religion Religion is important to every culture
It helps people to make sense of the world and gives them purpose Religion guides people’s ethics and directs what type of behavior is acceptable Some religions are monotheistic, and others are polytheistic All have prayers and rituals All expect people to treat each other well and behave properly
