Carried a petition asking for better working conditions and more personal freedom
Guards were ordered to fire on the crowd
Killed between 500-1,000 unarmed civilians

Russia = unprepared to handle military and economic cost
A year into the war, 4 million soldiers had been killed
War = destroying the morale of the troops
