Capacity and Volume and Measuring Mass

Learning Goals Volume measures the space an object occupies, while capacity measures the amount of liquid or gas an object holds. Units of capacity and volume are related. Large masses are measured in kilograms, small masses are measured in grams, and very small masses are measured in milligrams.

Units of both volume and capacity are used to measure the ‘size’ of three-dimensional objects.

Units of capacity, such as milliliters (mL) or liters (L), are used to measure liquids or gases and the containers that hold them.

Units of volume, such as cubic centimeters or cubic meters are used to measure the space an object occupies.

Conversion of Capacity Measures
You can use these relationships to convert between volume and capacity measures: Conversion of Capacity Measures 1 cm3 = 1 mL 1 m3 = 1000 L 1000 cm3 = 1 L 1m3= cm3

Conversion of Capacity Measures
Examples 2400 mL= L 3.5 m3= L 79 cm3= mL cm3 = m3 132cm3= L 6250L= m3 Conversion of Capacity Measures 1 cm3 = 1 mL 1 m3 = 1000 L 1000 cm3 = 1 L 1m3= cm3

Measuring Mass Mass Conversions 1000 mg = 1 g 1000 g = 1 kg
kg = 1 t
