Inference Syllables: in-fer-ence; (3)
Definition: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning. Examples: Reading between the lines Guest at dinner party ask for 2nd –means they liked it Non-Examples: Misconceiving something Ignoring facts to get a conclusion

Reading between the lines
Inference is like… Reading between the lines You state what you think the author is trying to show even though they don’t actually say it. How do we do this? Focus on: What the characters say How the characters act How characters react to situations How characters feel

Examples… John hears a smoke alarm and smells bacon.
What can he infer? The neighbor burn their bacon Norman sees cookie crumbs on the floor and chocolate all over his son’s face. What can he infer based on the evidence? His son got into the cookie jar Ted drops his kite after looking outside and sees that it’s raining. Ted begins to cry. What can you infer about Ted? He really wanted to fly a kite today.
