FAQS on Stroke What is Stroke? Stroke also known as brain attack, refers to the interference in the blood supply to the brain. The affected part of the brain gets deprived of oxygen and nutrients causing cell death.

How to recognize a stroke? A patient with a stroke may present with the following symptoms in next coming slides-

Sudden weakness or numbness in arms, face or leg.
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

Difficulty in speech Dysarthria refers to a difficulty in pronouncing certain sounds or words that is usually due to a problem with muscle control. ... Spasmodic dysphonia is a condition characterized by difficulty speaking because of repetitive or continuous spasms of the muscles that control the vocal cords

Difficulty in walking Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body. Sudden confusion or trouble speaking or understanding. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

Dizziness Common causes of dizziness include a migraine, medications, and alcohol. It can also be caused by a problem in the inner ear, where balance is regulated. Dizziness is often a result of vertigo as well. The most common cause of vertigo and vertigo-related dizziness is benign positional vertigo (BPV)

If the patient is unconscious, perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and continue till the emergency help arrives.

Consume a low-fat, low salt, high-fiber diet such as whole grains, fruit and vegetables.

Avoid tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption

Exercise regularly to maintain a healthy weight.

Reduce stress by yoga, meditation and other recreational activities

Keep a check on weight, blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels
