What is the title? Does it have a clear meaning? Do you have any prior knowledge about the author? R: Read/Rephrase Read it twice. Rephrase in the margin one sentence at a time. Define unknown words (actually write those definitions beside the poem.) A: Analyze Who is speaking in the poem? Describe the speaker’s voice. Who is being spoken to? What is the poem talking about? What is the tone/emotion of the poem? S: Sound Structure What do you hear? Rhymes? Repeated words or sounds? Special punctuation? H: How is it presented? How does it look? How many lines? How many stanzas? How much space between lines? Any weird capitalization/lower case? I: Imagery Label the five senses. What does this poem make you see hear feel smell taste Label all figurative language (simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, etc) Circle three or four of the most vivid words. T: Theme What is the big idea? Does this poem leave you with a message or central emotion?
