1 Appreciative Inquiry and Teaching English

2 Read This Poem (Individually – 1 min.)
First read for: Positive or Negative? ------ 2. Now make notes where you see: Images (pictures) Colors (red, blue, green, etc.) Feelings (emotional and physical)

3 Dividing the Poem Identify the four parts of the poem.
Draw lines to separate the four parts. Copies of the poem can be found at:

4 Poetry in Motion

5 Poetry in Motion (Teamwork – 5 min.)
Each team will work with one part of the poem. Discuss the overall meaning of your part of the poem. What images do you see? What colors do you see? What emotions and textures do you feel? Create actions for the words/meaning in your part. You may also draw 2 pictures for your part. Your group will provide the actions and visuals to your part of the poem.

6 From Poetry to Video Connect the visuals and actions of the poem to the following video. (This is a true story.)

7 Video Discussion (Teamwork – 3 min.)
1. Discuss with team: How did the poem connect to the video? What other words can you brainstorm? (think of as many as possible) Identify 5 positive words to share. 2. Share 2 of your words . Elicit from groups 2 words

Ap-pre’ci-ate, v., 1. valuing; the act of recognizing the best in people or the world around us; affirming past and present strengths, successes, and potentials; to perceive those things that give life (health, vitality, excellence) to living systems 2. to increase in value, e.g. the economy has appreciated in value. Synonyms: VALUING, PRIZING, ESTEEMING, and HONORING.
