6 Writing a Report Directions: Write a report based on the following information. Write more than 200 words. The table above provides some information about the proportion of smokers in males and females (between the age of 18 and 25) in China. Summarize the information by reporting the main features.

7 What are the main features?

8 Main Features: Male smokers outnumbered female smokers except for The number of male smokers steadily increased through the period of and then decreased. The number of females smokers steadily increased through the period of then decreased. Smoking number doubled and almost tripled between Smoking popularity has diminished in the 2000s Male and female smokers are at similar levels between

9 What can we infer? Smoking was more popular among males in the 70s and 80s Women became more interested in smoking in the 90s Both sexes have become not as interested in smoking in the 2000s Even so, compared to 1975, there were substantially more smokers in 2005.

10 Try writing a 200 word response to this table.
Let’s see how you do! Smokers in China

11 How can we turn this information into 200 words?
It is a proven fact that smoking is harmful to your health. Smoking leads to cancer, heart disease, emphysema, and early death. Because of a sharp increase in cigarette sales in the last 30 years, more and more people are currently dying of smoking in China. While the act of smoking has been in existence for an untraceable amount of time, the increase of smoking in China can be seen in the mid 70s where 10% of Chinese males between the ages of 18 to 25 and 5% of Chinese females between the ages of 18 to 25 took up smoking. The number steadily increased through the 80s and reached its peak from Whereas Chinese men for the most part dominated the proportion of smokers, the roles switched around where Chinese women made up the largest proportion of smokers. Since the peak, the numbers for both sexes have steadily gone down, not quite making it as low as the 1975 starting point but 9% lower than the highest male proportion and 10% lower than the highest female proportion. Even so, nearly one third of all young adults in China currently smoke, which poses a threat to the health and well being of the nation’s future.
