3
Units of Weight/Mass
4
Before we get to the gory details, let’s just talk about the size of the units.
What unit would you use to measure the weight of a box of pasta? pounds or ounces What unit would you use to measure the weight of a car? tons What unit would you use to measure the weight of a letter? ounces
5
Basic Equivalences – Weight/Mass
1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
6
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many pounds is 40 ounces? We are going from a smaller measure (ounces) to a larger measure (pounds) so we have to divide. = 2.5 pounds Basic Equivalences 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
7
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many tons is 9280 pounds? We are going from a smaller unit (pounds) to a larger unit (tons), therefore divide. = 4.64 tons Basic Equivalences 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
8
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many ounces is 3.25 pounds? We are going from a larger unit (pounds) to a smaller unit (ounces) therefore multiply. 3.25 × 16 = 52 ounces Basic Equivalences 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
9
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many pounds is 3.45 tons? We are going from a larger unit (tons) to a smaller unit (pounds) therefore multiply. 3.45 × 2000 = 7900 pounds Basic Equivalences 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
10
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many ounces is 0.12 tons? We are going from a larger unit (tons) to a smaller unit (ounces), therefore multiply. But we don’t have a conversion factor for tons to ounces, so first we have to convert the tons to pounds! 0.12 tons × 2000 = 240 pounds 240 pounds × 16 = 3,840 ounces Basic Equivalences 1 pound = 16 ounces 1 ton = 2,000 pounds
11
Units of Capacity (liquid)
12
Standard Equivalences – Capacity/Volume
1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
13
What unit would you use to buy nail polish?
Fluid ounces What unit would you use to fill your car with gas? Gallons What unit would you use to measure coffee for a party? Depends on the party.
14
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many quarts is 6 pints? We are going from a smallert unit (pints) to a larger unit (quarts), therefore divide. 6 2 = 3 pints Standard Equivalences – Capacity 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
15
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many ounces is 7 cups? We are going from a larger unit (cups) to a smaller unit (ounces), therefore multiply. 7 x 8 = 56 ounces Standard Equivalences – Capacity 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
16
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many ounces is 1.5 quarts? We are going from a larger unit (quarts) to a smaller unit (ounces), therefore multiply. But we don’t have a conversion factor for quarts to ounces, so first we have to turn quarts into pints, and pints into cups, and cups into ounces. 1.5 quarts x 2 = 3 pints 3 pints x 2 = 6 cups 6 cups x 8 = 48 ounces Standard Equivalences – Capacity 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
17
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many gallons is 23 cups? We are going from a smaller unit (quarts) to a larger unit (ounces), therefore divide. But we don’t have a conversion factor for gallons to ounces, so first we have to turn quarts into pints, and pints into cups, and cups into ounces. Standard Equivalences – Capacity 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
18
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide How many gallons is 23 cups? 23 cups 2 = 11.5 pints 11.5 pints 2 = 5.75 quarts 5.75 quarts 4 = gallons Standard Equivalences – Capacity 1 gallon = 4 quarts 1 quart = 2 pints 1 pint = 2 cups 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces
19
To change a measurement from a larger unit to a smaller unit– multiply
To change a measurement from a smaller unit to a larger unit– divide If there is no direct conversion factor, You will have to go through intermediate steps to complete the conversion.
