The Niche Examples In this picture, it shows the
function of a tree in our life. for example, the tree takes some of the CO2 and makes it into O2 while some carbon is also stored in the soil Textbook Definition: Describes not only what an organism does, but also how it interacts with biotic and abiotic factors in the environment Online Definition: The position or function of an organism in a community of plants and animals.
3
Niche (Continued) Tolerance Resources
Definition: The ability to survive and reproduce under certain environmental circumstances Definition: The necessity of life for any animal, such as nutrients. Examples: Mosquitoes need blood to survive. Otherwise, they die. Example: Mosquitoes Summer Winter
4
Niche (Continued) Biological aspects of Niche
Definition: The biotic factors it requires for survival. Example: Mosquitoes need our blood to survive, so they stab us with their needles.
5
Competition Happens when organisms attempt to use the same limited resources. examples: food, shelter, mates, etc. Two kinds of Competition: Intraspecific- between two or more species. Interspecific- between one kind of species.
6
The Competitive Exclusion Principle
Also known as Gause's Law of Competitive Exclusion This principle states: “Intraspecific Competition always ends with a winner and loser, and the loser usually dies out. Hence no two species can occupy the same niche in the same habitat at one time.”
7
Mutualism Interaction between two species in which both of them benefit.
8
Parasitism Interaction between two species in which one of them benefits and the other is harmed.
9
Commensalism Interaction between two species in which one benefits and the other is not affected.
