Standards for Measurement
2
Force The amount of push or pull on an object. Unit = Newton (N).
Use a spring scale.
3
Weight The amount of pull on an object based on gravity.
Unit = Newton (N) b/c gravity is a kind of force. Use a spring scale
4
Mass The amount of matter an object is made of. Unit = gram (g).
Use a triple beam balance.
5
Which has a greater mass?
Which has a greater weight?
6
So what’s the difference between mass and weight?
7
Length The amount of distance an object is or travels.
Unit = meter (m). Use a ruler. To get AREA, multiply length X width (answer is units square)
8
Volume The amount of space an object takes up. Unit = liter (L).
Use a graduated cylinder or ruler.
9
To Get Volume Measure length, width and height then multiply.
Answer is units cubed.
10
Practice Some boxes in a warehouse all have a length of 30 cm, a width of 30 cm and a height of 20 cm. What is the volume of each box?
11
Temperature The amount of molecular motion in an object.
Molecular motion ↑, temperature ↑ Molecular motion ↓, temperature ↓ Unit = Celsius scale (°C) Use a thermometer
