One Step Algebra Equations

Example 1. x – 9 = 12 Is x alone? No. There is a subtract 9 beside it. How do we get rid of it? Opposite operation: Add 9.

Example 1 x – 9 = 12 x – = x – 0 = 21 x = 21 Check 21 – 9 = 12 YES!!!!!

You try one…. Example 2 36 = x – 12 SAME AS x – 12 = 36
CHECK 44 – 12 = 36 YES!!!!!!

Solving by Subtraction
Example 3 x + 17 = 35 x + 17 – 17 = 35 – 17 x + 0 = 18 x = 18

You try one…. Example 4 9 + x = 24 9 – 9 + x = 24 – 9 0 + x = 24 – 9

Solving by Division Example 1 3x = 18
Remember 3x means 3 times a variable How do we get rid of multiplication? The opposite operation is division! x = 6

Solving by Multiplication
Example 3 x = 6 3 How do we get rid of division? Multiplication! 3 (x) = 6 x 3 (3) x = 18

Make up your own…! You are going to make up 10 algebra equations.
Solve them too. Double check the answers. Give the questions to a partner and have them solve them. Use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division in your equations. Once you are done, return it to the owner for marking. Hand it in for marks.
