Algebra Methods
2
Note 1: Algebraic Expressions
In algebra: a variable (letter) is used to stand for a number write letters in alphabetical order eg. pqr write numbers before letters eg. 2p
3
Examples: Write down as an algebraic expression
Eight more than six times x 6x + 8 Four less than twice x 2x - 4
4
Note 2: Simplifying like terms
Like terms can be added or subtracted, if they are the same term and of the same power. The sign (+ or -) belongs to the number or variable after it. Examples: Simplify 3a + a – 2a = 4b – 7b + 2b = 7c + 5d – 9c + 2d = 5ef + 6fg – 8fe + 7hg = 2a -b -2c + 7d -3ef + 6fg + 7gh
5
When we add and subtract like terms with powers, we do not change the powers.
Examples: Simplify k3 – k2 + 3k + 4k3 – 6k2 = 5k3 – 7k2 + 3k
6
Note 3: Multiplying and Dividing Terms
All numbers and variables can be combined when multiplying. NB. A dot means multiplying. Examples: Simplify -3a . 4b = -2c . 4e . -5d = -12ab 40cde
7
When dividing, cancel fractions by pairing numbers and letters.
Examples: Simplify
8
Note 4: BEDMAS Remember to follow BEDMAS rules when simplifying expressions. Examples: Simplify y – y . y = 2x . 3z + 4z = y – y2 6xz + 4z
