Solute Solvent Diffusion Equilibrium Osmosis Semi-permeable membrane High/ Low concentration
4
Diffusion Diffusion is the process by which molecules spread from areas of high concentration, to areas of low concentration. When the molecules are even throughout a space - it is called EQUILIBRIUM
5
In other words… Diffusion is the movement of SOLUTE from a HIGH concentration to a LOW concentration. EQUILIBRIUM HIGH LOW
6
Osmosis Osmosis is the passage of water across a membrane that only allows certain substances to pass
7
Osmosis cont. The solute is more concentrated on the right side to start with. This causes molecules to move across the membrane toward the left until equilibrium is reached. Selectively Permeable Membranes allow some things across the membrane. For example water and oxygen move freely across the cell's membrane, by diffusion
