Nipple – nob where babies suckle and milk exits body Areola – glands that moisturize the nipple during lactation Pectoralis major: muscle located anterior to the breast Ligaments: hold alveoli in place

Suckling Stimulates pituitary gland to release Prolactin and Oxytocin Prolactin stimulates alveoli to secrete milk Oxytocin stimulates alveoli to eject milk

Mother’s milk is rich in protein, fat, calcium Provides antibodies for immunity Stronger emotional bond between mother and child Recommend 6 months to one year
