MY GOAL G.O.T. = Get On Task Design an Experiment
Measurement TOPIC: MY GOAL G.O.T. = Get On Task Tues Design an Experiment I will learn to design & perform an experiment JUST READ BELOW Things to remember: How many variables should there be in an experiment? What is the Independent Variable? The Dependent Variable? What is the control group?
2
Procedure …. AKA “What are we doin’ today?”
Review Key Terms Get in groups Do experiment Begin poster = 14 pts! End of Class Assignment
3
Stop Think And Review Key Terms! Hypothesis Independent Variable
Control Group Experimental Group Constants
4
Hypothesis Must be testable! If…., Then… statement IF = the CAUSE
THEN = the EFFECT IF I use Martha Stewart Water (that’s the CAUSE) , THEN my plants will grow 12 inches taller (that’s the EFFECT)
5
Experimental Variables:
Independent Variable = TEST controlled by experimenter Dependent Variable = OUTCOME an action; a verb; it changes CAUSE EFFECT… Type of water Growth of plant
6
Experimental Set up: CONTROL GROUP: EXPERIMENTAL GROUP:
NO changes- All conditions kept the same – cont. as usual Baseline for comparison No action taken EXPERIMENTAL GROUP: Change made – called the test group- kept the same except for the ONE thing being tested Action taken Cont. as normal with tap water Change ONLY the water to ‘Martha Stewart’ brand
7
Constants Are all things kept THE SAME in the experiment to make it RELIABLE. Examples: IDENTICAL kind of plant SAME size of bowl EQUAL amounts of dirt SAME time of watering plants SAME kind of….
8
YOUR JOB TODAY Get in groups… Get stuff out of bag
Run your experiment Collect data Independent Variable = CAUSE Dependent variable = EFFECT Control Group = normal; used to compare exp. Group to Constants = things that remain the same Simultaneously, work on poster (see board) Poster complete by tomorrow!
9
Stop Think And Reflect Did we reach our goal?
To collaborate & perform experiment Did you reach that goal? How do you know you reached the goal? What are YOU going to do if you did not reach that goal?? 9
10
Check to see how much you rebmember…
Independent Variable Dependent Variable Control Group Experimental Group Constants The variable you are TESTING! It is the CAUSE; some kind of ACTION taken The Variable that is the RESULT of the testing; It is the EFFECT of the cause The group that is NORMAL; you do NOTHING to it; It is use for COMPARISON The group that is EXPERIMENTED on; Something HAPPENS to it THINGS that remain the SAME in both the control & experimental groups!;
