7 Goals for the Day If given a rhetorical choice and the author’s argument, purpose, or tone, I can explain how the rhetorical choice helps the author develop the overall argument, purpose, and/or tone.

8 Voice Lessons - Syntax Consider:
The seven years’ difference in our ages lay between us like a chasm: I wondered if these years would ever operate between us as a bridge. - James Baldwin, “Sonny’s Blues” Discuss: What function does the colon serve in this sentence? How would the meaning and impact of the sentence change if the sentence read as follows: The seven years’ difference in our ages lay between us like a chasm, and I wondered if these years would ever operate between us as a bridge. Apply: Write two independent clauses; join the two with a colon, giving emphasis to the independent clause which follows the colon. Use Baldwin’s sentence as a model. Share your sentence with the class.

9 Open Rhetorical Device Book - Hypophora
Turn to page 26. What is hypophora? Underline it. What are its uses? Highlight in one color Is there anything we should be cautious of when using hypophora? Highlight it in a different color. Look at the exercise on page There are two examples of hypophora. Identify the two questions that are asked and the answer given to each.

10 Hypophora Hypophora: The technique of asking a question, then proceeding to answer it. This is a useful strategic device when writing essays to inform or persuade. Use #1: to introduce a paragraph. Use #2: to guide your reader from point to point to make sure they are following. Use #3: to anticipate questions or concerns you think your reader might raise. By addressing these concerns directly, you help strengthen your case. By phrasing them in question form first, you make it clear that you understand your reader’s thought process. Use #4: to help your reader feel directly involved in the discussion Use #5: to help introduce important information without making it seem like you’re forcing it upon them to readers who might know too little about the topic. Phrasing it as a question leads your readers to feel as if they thought of it – making your answer seem like something they always wanted to know.

11 Exercise 1 Why have I come to Birmingham?
I am here because I was invited here as a the president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization operating in every southern state, with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. So, I am here because I have organizational ties here. I am here because injustice is here. I am here because I am compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my own home town, much like the Apostle Paul was compelled to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ to the far corners of the Roman world. I am here because your city’s white power structure left the Negro community with no other alternative. I am here because you say you deplore demonstrations taking place in Birmingham, but you fail to express a similar concern for the conditions that brought about the demonstrations.

12 Exercise 1 Why are you taking direct action, using sit-ins, marches, and so forth? Isn’t negotiation a better path? I am using direct action to create such a crisis and foster such a tension that a community who has constantly refused to negotiate is forced to confront these issues. I am using direct action to dramatize the issue so that it can no longer be ignored. I am here because you and your white leaders have forced me to be here and because you have refused to negotiate (implied).

13 Open to Google Classroom
Open to the Quick Write assignment.

14 Quick write Write a paragraph explaining how Martin Luther King Jr. uses hypophora to help him make his argument to local leaders that direct action is necessary?

15 What should we see in the paragraph?
Topic sentence that contains the claim – hypophora is used to help MLK achieve his argument that _____. Reasoning – why do you believe this to be true – what makes you say this? What helps you get from hypophora to argument? Evidence – where do you see evidence of this reasoning being accurate. This might include some of your own reasoning and logic that helps you arrive at your conclusion.

16 Multiple Step Connections
Not all strategies used will have a direct correlation to the argument, tone, or purpose. For example – let’s assume the author uses a simile. The author may use the simile to help the reader see the connection between the way the white leader feel about their own family members and the way African Americans feel about their family members being treated unfairly. By creating this connection for the white leaders, MLK is then able to make a point that all humans have the same desires to be treated fairly and justly. Once he’s made this point, he can use it as one of his logical (logos) pieces of support that helps him to develop his overall argument of why he is in Birmingham and why he must take direct action.

17 Making connections Assume for now that MLK’s main argument is:
African Americans should be treated as equals and they will do what it takes to ensure white leaders begin to make changes that will ensure these changes occur. Assume for now that MLK’s tone is: Urgent Assume for now that MLK’s purpose is: To respond clearly to white leaders who asked why he is in Birmingham and why direct action is necessary.

18 Homework Study for Vocabulary Quiz #8
Rhetorical Question – read, add to rhetorical device log, and complete the activities in workbook Read pages in your textbook if you haven’t already. Try to answer questions 1-4 on page Do your best – even if you don’t fully understand, be prepared to discuss what you could and could not find. And be prepared to discuss why Kennedy might have used some of these rhetorical strategies.
