Lesson /19/17 SWBAT design a lab to simulate the effect of ocean acidification on shells. Do Now: Identify the independent variable, dependent variable, control group, and constants (at least 2) for this lab
2
Ocean Acidification
3
Ocean Acidification Lab
Experimental Design: Testable question: How does pH affect the mass of shells? Independent variable: Dependent variable: Hypothesis: (If…. Then….. Because) Adjust if needed based on variables
4
Constants Constant: something that scientist makes sure is the same throughout the experiment Ex. Watering the plants the same amount of water Constants:____________
5
Control Control: The part of the experiment that isn’t affected by the independent variable. Ex: plant without any fertilizer
6
Control Control: Water
7
Materials Materials: Shells Vinegar Water 2 Beakers (plastic cups)
Scale Pipet Gloves Tape
8
Lab Safety Wear gloves if handling vinegar Vinegar is acidic!
Be careful and don’t spill it!
9
Collect Materials Person 1: Grab two cups from me
Person 2: Grab one roll of pH paper Person 3: Grab two shells that are similar in shape When you have your materials, go back to your seat and begin procedure
10
Lab Notes There are only 2 scales
If you are waiting for a scale you can: Label your cups Test the pH of water and vinegar
11
Clean up All paper towels, pH paper and gloves should be in the trash.
When you are finished cleaning up, go back to your seat.
