What is the Bubonic Plague?
Widespread epidemic in the 1300’s. Asia, North Africa, Europe 1/3 of Europe’s population died due to this disease. Common nicknames: “The Black Death” “ The Black Plague”

Origins of the disease Began in Asia spread through TRADE.
1347 it arrived in Italy and quickly spread to Spain, France, Germany, and England

What caused it? A bacteria in fleas.
The fleas traveled on rats which helped the disease spread. Unsanitary conditions in Europe (garbage and sewage build-up) breeding grounds for rats.

Symptoms Painful swellings-buboes Purplish/Blackish spots on the skin
Armpits and groin Purplish/Blackish spots on the skin Extremely high fever, chills, and delirium
