1 GALATIANS Title: Galatians 1a: Paul's Gospel is from God Text: Galatians 1:1-10 Galatians 1:8 (NIV84) 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! By: Pastor Micah Adamson September 17, 2017 Title

2 Review of Galatians Introduction:
Who wrote Galatians? The Apostle Paul Who received Galatians? The Galatian churches in Turkey What problem was the recipients of Galatians facing? Gentile Christians were being tempted to become Jews in order to stay Christians. What solution did the author of Galatians offer? Paul says that both Jews and Gentiles are only justified by God through faith in Christ [alone] apart from works of the law. Paul says that the law is good, but that the only way we can obey the law is by the power of the Holy Spirit sanctifying us.

3 Summary of Galatians: Revelation: God revealed in both the Old and New Testament that people can only be saved by trusting God’s promise to rescue us from God’s wrath and to make us into His people. Justification: We are justified before God by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone and adding anything to Jesus’ finished work on the cross to save us denies the gospel. Sanctification: And yet, we are sanctified by the Holy Spirit when we believe in Jesus and end up obey God as His children instead of failing to obey God as His slaves.

Chapter 1-2: Revelation: The Source of the Gospel: it came directly from God (0 OT quotes) Galatians 1: Paul's Gospel is from God Galatians 1:11-22 Paul's Apostleship is from God Galatians 2: Paul's Gospel is the same as Peter's Gospel Galatians 2:11-21 Paul calls Peter to live in light of their shared Gospel (Note: While Galatians 1-2 doesn’t quote from the OT, it does allude to the OT.)

6 Outline of Galatians: (3 of 3)

7 Galatians 1:1-5 (NIV84) (1 of 3)
1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Galatians 1:11-12 (NIV84) 11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

8 Galatians 1:1-5 (NIV84) (2 of 3)
1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. Romans 5:1-2 (NIV84) 1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.

9 Galatians 1:1-5 (NIV84) (3 of 3)
1 Paul, an apostle—sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead— 2 and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia: 3 Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 4 who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, 5 to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen. 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV84) 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

10 Galatians 1:6-9 (NIV84) (1 of 2)
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned! Exodus 32:8 (NIV84) 8 They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.’

11 Galatians 1:6-9 (NIV84) (2 of 2)
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. 12 Galatians 1:10 (NIV84) 10 Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

13 Recap: Galatians 1:1-10 (NIV84) - Paul's Gospel is from God (1 of 2)

14 Recap: Galatians 1:1-10 (NIV84) - Paul's Gospel is from God (2 of 2)
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 which is really no gospel at all. Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ.

15 Conclusion: Galatians 1:8 (NIV84) 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! Do you believe Paul’s gospel?

16 Several ways to get the gospel wrong:
Galatians 2:21 (NIV84) 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing! Do you believe another gospel?

17 The one way to get the gospel right:
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 (NIV84) 3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures… Do you know the facts of the good news about Jesus? Do you believe the facts of the gospel are actually true? Do you trust in Jesus to save you from God’s punishment of your sin by Jesus’ death in your place?
