Only one major Christian group in Europe before 1517 – Catholics
Result: corruption
Embezzling money, greed amongst the church officials (The Pope, priests).
Martin Luther: wanted the church “to reform”, came up with the 95 Theses. Was eventually kicked out of the Catholic Church, created new church (Lutherans).

5. B. New Religious Groups
After the Protestant Reformation, new religious groups emerged.
What are the religious groups in Europe now?
What countries are a part of each religious group? Name two for each group.

6. C. Effect: Religious Competition
Spain and France vs. England: became bitter rivals over different Christian groups.
Religious rivalry became competition for colonization – each group tried to spread Catholicism or Protestantism throughout the New World.

7. D. Effect: Desire for Religious Freedom
Some groups in England wanted more reform, to “purify” church practices – became known as Puritans.
Felt that changes in England were just to satisfy the king and not done for religious purposes.
Wanted simplified worship services, the ability to meet independently, and a more moral society.
Were punished for their different beliefs – usually higher taxes.
As a result, Puritans wanted to create a colony in the New World where they could have their own form of Protestantism.
