Unit 4: Inorganic Nomenclature
October 4th
2
Metals and Non-Metals Your new best friend!
3
Ions atom or molecule that has an electrical charge (due to the gaining or losing of an electron) (49) Give me some examples!
4
Ionic compounds positive ions (ex) Na+) and negative (ex) Cl-) form ionic compounds Remember: ions are charged, but compound are neutral (no charge) KEYWORDS anion: ion with –ve charge cation: ion with a +ve charge
5
ion charges
6
keywords p68 monatomic diatomic triatomic polyatomic
7
Take a look at ions P3- What is the element?
Metal or non-metal (or transition/metalloid)? Monatomic, diatomic? What is the charge?
8
Naming Monatomic Metal Ions
a. Metal with one possible charge – name stays the same Ex. Sodium (Na) Sodium ion (Na+) b. Metal with more than one possible charge – name stays the same, but number is included. Ex. Fe3+ Iron (III) ion or Fe2+ Iron (II) ion
9
Naming Monatomic Non-metal Ions p69
Element name Symbol Ion name Ion symbol Fluorine F Fluoride F- Chlorine Cl Chloride Cl- Bromine Br Bromide Br- Iodine I Iodide I- Oxygen O Oxide O *** Sulphur S Sulphide S *** Nitrogen N Nitride N *** Phosphorus P Phosphide P *** Carbon C Carbide C ***
10
Naming Polyatomic Ions p69
These will be given to you in the data table.
