What is Normal Progress Policy?
Per School of Natural Sciences policy, students are required to complete their degree requirements ( units) within 9 semesters. Summer sessions, or semesters gone on an ELP (Educational Leave), are not counted towards your 9 semesters. Enrollment beyond 9 semesters requires a normal progress policy petition (submitted during your 9th semester) to be reviewed by the School Dean. Petition for a 10th term is not guaranteed. Petitions for an Additional Term will not be accepted from students until they are in their 9th semester of enrollment and they will not be completing their degree requirements within the established limit. This Petition is also only available from an academic advisor based on need. Students currently completing their 9th semester of enrollment will be contacted by the School of Natural Sciences with specific information regarding the petition process. Students should be preparing to complete all degree requirements within the allotted 9 terms.

Commencement Each student may participate in only one ceremony as an undergraduate. Undergraduates may choose to participate in Fall Commencement if they will complete their degree requirements that semester. Or, opt to wait to walk until the following Spring Commencement. Students who complete their degree requirements in Spring, or Summer, may participate in Spring Commencement. Participation in commencement does not necessarily mean that a student has completed all of their degree requirements. Students must confirm their Spring Commencement participation when submitting their Graduation Application. Full Regalia must be worn. Commencement is the ceremony celebration!

Completing elsewhere? Here’s what you need to know
Keep in communication with your advisor. Use previously approved course lists. Submit course approvals early (mandatory for Bio courses)! All courses must be taken for a letter grade. Grades of C- or better must be earned in order for credit to be awarded. To receive credit for courses taken elsewhere, you must submit official transcripts from the institution you attended by the deadline. Courses taken outside the UC (Community College, CSU, and other 4-Year Universities) are not included in the total GPA but can be used to fulfill degree requirements. Grades and units taken at another UC are counted in the cumulative GPA and units if taken during the summer or through an approved UC program (ex: Intercampus Visit Program) UC Extension courses (excluding Concurrent Enrollment) cannot be used towards degree requirements as the courses are intended for non-degree seeking students. The course approval form should be used for courses that are offered in the School of Natural Sciences (BIO, CHEM, ESS, MATH, PHYS). For courses offered in the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, their webform can be found here. Syllabi should include a description and summary of the course, required texts and readings and a week by week course outline. Save the syllabus document as a PDF or .doc/docx document EAP Students: Please provide a syllabus in English. If translated from another language, attach the original to the English translation. Submit the course approval webform as early as you can, as the process can take a minimum of 8 weeks upon submission for a decision to be made. Community college courses cannot apply as upper division courses or towards upper division requirements. UC Extension courses cannot be used towards degree requirements as the courses are intended for non-degree seeking students.

When will I get my Diploma?
Your unofficial transcript, viewable at MyStudentRecord, will show your degree conferral. Degrees are normally conferred 8-10 weeks after the end of the term, and will post to your transcript. Degrees are not distributed at commencement. Your degree will be mailed to you 3-4 months after you have completed your final degree requirements. To ensure you receive your degree within the 3-4 month time frame verify you do not have any holds on your account. An official transcript is the most authoritative way to show your degree conferral and is a copy of your permanent academic record. Your final transcript will display your degree, major, concentration, minor, honors, grades, and degree conferral date (where applicable). Minors and emphasis/concentrations are not listed on your degree. You will be sent only one copy of your degree. Addiotional copies can be purchased for $64. It will be mailed to your mailing address on file with UC Merced. It is important that you keep all addresses up to date with the University even after you graduate. To update your address, log into my.ucmerced.edu and select MyPersonalInformation. Any outstanding student account balance must be resolved and all loan/financial aid exit interviews must be completed before your diploma or transcript will be released.
