1 Energy Review

2 Energy A property of objects which can be transferred to other objects or converted into different forms, but cannot be created or destroyed “Ability of a system to perform work“ Measured in joules a distance of 1 meter against a force of 1 newton 1 J = 1 Nm

3 Kinetic vs Potential Energy
Kinetic Energy Potential Energy The energy that it possesses due to its motion KE = (1/2)mv^2 m = mass v = velocity The energy that an object has due to its position PE = mgh m = mass g = Earth’s gravitational constant = 9.8 m/s h = height

4 Forms of Energy Chemical Energy Electrical Energy Radiant Energy
Mechanical Energy Thermal (heat) Energy Sound Energy Solar Energy Nuclear Energy

5 Energy Transformations
A change from one form of energy to another Single Transformation One form of energy is transformed into another Ex. Toaster Multiple Transformation A series of energy transformations Ex. Car engine

6 Law of Conservation of Energy
When one form of energy is transformed to another, no energy is destroyed in the process In physics, the law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system remains constant—it is said to be conserved over time. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed; rather, it transforms from one form to another.
