2 Rates The death rate is the number of deaths per year for every 1,000 people. Factors that increase death rate are famine (severe lack of food), war, and crop failures. The birthrate is the number of children born each year for every 1,000 people. Factors that increase birthrate are advances in medicine and improved farming techniques.

4 Movement Population density is the average number of people living in a square mile. Urbanization is the growth of cities. Some people emigrate, or leave the country where they were born and move to another. Refugees are people who are forced to move to another country to escape wars, persecution, or natural disasters.

5 Name reasons that people might leave a country.
