1 Homework: Maintenance Sheet 8.12
Due Thursday Answer questions 1-2 on Unit 3 review

2 Relations and Functions
A relation is a pairing between two sets of numbers It is usually written as a set of ordered pairs Example: {(11, 63), (12, 64), (13, 65), (14, 70), (15, 72), (16, 72)} A function is a special type of relation, where your x coordinate does not repeat.

3 A function is a special type of relation, where your x coordinate does not repeat.

4 Domain and Range {(1, 3), (3, 5), (4, 3), (2, 8)}
{(3, 7), (10, 13), (4, 9), (10, 8), (12, 4)} The domain of a relation is the set of first coordinates of the ordered pairs The range of a relation is the set of second coordinates of the ordered pairs We can also visualize this graphically

5 Linear Functions Sometimes, instead of writing coordinates that belong to a certain function, we write them as an equation with two variables, usually x and y Examples: Each of these has infinite solutions that can be written in coordinate form d = 5t 3x + 2y = 10 y = 5x -10p = 2q +1

6 I can determine if a table, graph, or set of ordered pairs is or is not a function and justify my conclusion. I can explain the difference between a relation and a function.

7 I can determine if a table, graph, or set of ordered pairs is or is not a function and justify my conclusion. I can explain the difference between a relation and a function.

8 I can determine if a table, graph, or set of ordered pairs is or is not a function and justify my conclusion. I can explain the difference between a relation and a function.

9 *Do not let the vinegar and *Do not use too much vinegar
*No horse playing *Do not let the vinegar and Baking soda mix *Do not use too much vinegar

10 Remember LAB safety rules/procedures
I can determine if a table, graph, or set of ordered pairs is or is not a function and justify my conclusion. I can explain the difference between a relation and a function. Materials Needed Water bottle “ghost’ (balloon) Marker Vinegar Baking soda Spoon, Paper/pencil, Ruler, graph paper, Timer/stopwatch Time Height What will be the height of your ghost in 15 seconds, 20 seconds, 25 seconds, 30 seconds, and 35 seconds? Create a table and graph related to your graph. Does a proportional relationship exist between the time and height of your ghost? Is the information you have graph represent a function? Explain Is your graph linear or non-linear? Explain. Compare the class data, does the class data represent a function? Explain

11 Is there a relationship between the time and height of your ghost and the class?
I can determine if a table, graph, or set of ordered pairs is or is not a function and justify my conclusion. I can explain the difference between a relation and a function.
