Population & Migration
2
When do you feel crowded at school?
How does overcrowding affect the way people live outside of school? There are over 7 billion people on Earth right now. What kind of challenges does that pose to the world’s population?
3
4 most populated regions of the world
East Asia South Asia Europe Southeast Asia
4
5th most populated area on Earth
New York Boston Toronto Quebec Montreal Philadelphia
5
What do you think are the 5 most populated countries?
China India United States Indonesia Brazil
6
Low population areas People tend to avoid living in lands that are
High Dry Cold Wet Can you identify one city or country for each of these areas?
7
Population Density We’ve seen population density maps before, but what is population density? Population density is the average number of people who live in a measurable area. Examples – Houston’s population density is people per square mile El Paso has 2.23 people per square mile New York has people per square mile!
8
Review: What are the 4 most populated regions of the world?
Why is East Asia #1 and South Asia #2? Why do you think New York has such a high population density?
9
Factors contributing to population increases
Population increases occur when the number of births exceeds the number of deaths. Natural increase factors do not include migration Natural Increase Factors include : Birth rate Death rate (Number of deaths per 1,000 individuals) Infant mortality rate - (The number of deaths of children under 1 year old per 1,000 live births) Total Fertility (Average number of children a woman has in her reproductive lifetime) Life expectancy (Average number of years someone can currently be expected to live)
10
Tomorrow: Challenges posed by population density and distribution of resources (Food, energy, wealth, etc) Strategies used to combat rising overpopulation
