1 Population make up Mr Boland Geography

2 When looking at the population we need to know the
The percentage of sex (male/ female) of the population. The percentage of ages.

3 Show the following on a graph
Age Male percentage of population Female percentage of population 60+ 3 20-59 19 18 0-19 28 29

4 Population pyramid

5

6 Life expectancy Birth Rates

7 As can be seen the pyramid is constructed of a series of bars, each bar telling how much population is in the age bracket. ( there is 125,000 females aged between 0-4 years of age). The youngest group is placed at the bottom while the oldest group at the top.

8 Developed country How would you describe life expectancy
What is the difference bewteen males and females aged 85 and over. Why is there a narrow base? Is this a young population, old population or even population? Give reasons for your answer.

9 Developed country The base is narrow due to family planning leading to low birth rates during the last decade. The top is wide as with good health care the life expectancy is high. Women also appear to live longer than men. (or could be due to world war 2) This is an aging (greying population) as the birth rates are declining.

10 What are the main differences between these two graphs.
3 2 1 What are the main differences between these two graphs.

11 Developed Vs developing countries
In a under developed country there will be: High birth rate so then bottom two bars will be big. High death rate so the bars in the graph will get smaller as it goes. Less people will survive to an old age Developed Vs developing countries

12

13 Brazil is developing Wide base as birth rate is high due to inequality in female education. Still mothers today have few children that mothers of the past hence the wide middle. Narrow top as life expectancy is low, as health care is not equal

14

15 Ethopia- Underdeveloped
High birth rate, Not many people survive to an old age. High death rate with the bars getting smaller.

16 Ireland Now

17 Why does the government need to do to cater for this population pyramid??????

18 Ireland 2050????? Low birth rate, low death rate and high life expectancy. Pensions are likely to grow. More homes for the elderly. More money for health care for the elderly. Retirement age likely to go down

19

20 Explain why there is a difference between the two graphs.

21 If you were to place each graph on the demographic transition model where would you place them.

22 The poplation structure of local areas can also. be drawn up.
How would you expect the populaiton of the school to look including teachers. How would you expect the population of the school to look with the teachers. Some housing estates would have an older population struture and lower pyramidal base than other maybe newer housing estates who have new families and young children living in them.

23 Discuss these local population pyramids?
