What was Reconstruction?
Reconstruction was the plan to rebuild America (South) following the Civil War Period saw tensions between North/South & the newly freed slaves (freedmen) There were 2 types of Reconstruction: Presidential – favored by Lincoln Congressional – favored by Congress

What was the difference between Presidential and Congressional Reconstruction?
Presidential Reconstruction = A “pardon” to Southerners with 10% loyalty oath Meant to be quick / painless Congressional Reconstruction (Radical Republicans) = Aimed at punishing South Re-admittance with 50% loyalty oath Civil liberties for former slaves

What happened to the former slaves?
Millions of slaves were now on their own. Most could not read/write & had nowhere to go – many become sharecroppers Freedman's Bureau was created to freed slaves make transition to freedom (no $$) Black Codes were passed in the South to limit the rights of former slaves (low wages/limited rights)

What were the 13th/14th/15th Amendments?
FREE-CITIZENS- VOTE 13th – Banned slavery (Free) 14th – All people born in the US are citizens and protected by the law (Citizen) 15th – Extended voting rights to all men

Who were carpetbaggers & scalawags?
Carpetbaggers were Northerners that moved south following the War They were seen as intruders Scalawags were Southerners who supported Republicans (Northerners) during Reconstruction (traitors?) ***African Americans began to enter politics at this time***

How did Reconstruction end?
Compromise of 1877 Controversial election leads to Republicans winning White House in exchange for withdrawal of Federal Troops Turn and Talk: What do you think happened when Federal Troops left?
