9.3 Simplifying and Multiplying Rational Expressions
4/13/2014
2
Rational Expression: an expression that is the ratio of two polynomials. It is "Rational" because one is divided by the other, like a ratio. the polynomial you are dividing by cannot be zero. Note: Ex:
3
Simplify the rational expression, if possible.
Example 1 Simplify a Rational Expression Simplify the rational expression, if possible. 15x = β’ x 5 Divide out the common factor 5 and simplify. a. =3π₯ 5 b. x x 5 + This expression is already in simplest form. c. 14x2 6x x x = β’ x Divide out the common factors 2 and x. = 3 7π₯ 3
4
Simplify the expression, if possible.
Checkpoint Simplify a Rational Expression Simplify the expression, if possible. 4x ANSWER 2x 5 1. 10 2. 8 4x ANSWER 2 x 9x ( 12 1 x + 3. ANSWER 3x ( 4 1 x + x 1 β 4. ANSWER already in simplest form
