How did the rule of Czar Alexander II end & when did this occur?
Revolutionaries assassinated him. 1881 Why? Did this because of how slowly political change was occurring.

2. List at least 5 ways that Czar Alexander III exerted his autocratic rule in Russia.
Relating to a ruler who has absolute power Stopped all reforms in Russia. Labeled many as “dangerous” (anyone who questioned his authority, worshipped outside Roman Orthodox Church, or spoke a language other than Russian) Censored documents & letters. Secret police force spied in schools. Political prisoners sent to Siberia. Oppressed other national groups. Made Russian official language & forbade any others. Violence against Jews in Russia.

3. When Nicholas II becomes the czar in 1894, was he any different than Alexander III? What does it say in the text that lets you know this? NO! “…he continued the tradition of Russian autocracy.”

What are two positive results of Russia’s industrialization?
# of factories more than doubled (1863 – 1900) Investors + raised taxes = increase in steel industry 1900 – Russia world’s 4th largest steel producer Trans-Siberian railway built (1891 – 1916) world’s longest continuous rail line

5. What are 4 problems that came about during Russia’s industrialization?
Harsh working conditions, low wages, child labor. Govt. banned unions. Workers were unhappy. (discontent) 6. How did workers who were unhappy with their conditions respond to Russian authorities? They went on strike!

What were the two groups that Russian Marxists split into in 1903 & why did they do so?
Mensheviks & Bolsheviks Split over revolutionary tactics. Mensheviks More moderate Wanted large portion of population to support the revolution Bolsheviks More radical Supported smaller number of revolutionaries ready to dedicate their lives to the revolution.

8. Legend says that one event turned Lenin into a revolutionary. What is this event? 1887, Lenin’s brother was hanged for plotting to kill the czar. Lenin already didn’t like the govt., but this influenced him further.
