Chemical Equations Short Hand for Chemical Reactions 1
2
Chemical Equations The chemical formulas for molecules & element symbols are used to write a summary of the chemical reaction. The equation has two parts: The reactants - the molecules you start with. The products - The molecules that get made. EX: HCl + NaOH -> H2O + NaCl Reactants Products 2
3
Chemical Equations The reactants are listed on the left side of the arrow. EX: HCl + NaOH -> Reactants The products are listed on the right side (arrow points toward) EX: > H2O + NaOH Products The arrow represents the reaction, the breaking of bonds & forming new ones. 3
4
Chemical Equations Sometimes the activation energy or the catalyst are listed in the equation. EX: 6CO2 + 6H2O Sunshine > C6H12O6 + 6O2 EX: H20 Platinum> 2H2 + O2 4
5
Chemical Equations A chemical equation is said to be balanced when it has the same number of atoms of each element on both sides. EX: Unbalanced CO2 + H2O Sunshine > C6H12O6 + O2 EX: Balanced 6CO2 + 6H2O Sunshine > C6H12O6 + 6O2 5
6
Chemical Equations Be prepared to:
Identify the products and reactants. Specify if the equation is balanced. Identify the activation energy or catalyst if listed. 6
7
Chemical Equations Question: Identify the products in the reaction below: A B C. HCl + NaOH -> H2O + NaCl A B C 7
