2. JML Course Selection Timeline
Teacher Recommendations:
Teacher recommendations were loaded into Phoenix on January 11th If the teacher recommended a level change in History, English or Science you would have been contacted directly. We use several data points for Math placement including the Winter Map Testing. To view your child's teacher recommendations log into ParentVUE and click on the Course Request tab.

4. Rising 7th Grade Timeline
*Mrs. Kenworthy and Ms. Melko met with students during Keyboarding classes January 16th-January 25th to complete course requests.
*Students selected electives at that time. Core Class (Math, English, Science and History) recommendations and required electives (PE, Tech Ed and FACS) were already pre loaded into StudentVUE.
*Parents will have until February 8, 2019 to view and make changes to students electives via Student/ParentVUE.
*If you would like to discuss a level change to a Core Course please contact you child’s teacher to discuss. If you still want a level change, contact your child's counselor directly as you will not be able to make the changes directly in Student/ParentVUE.

5. 7th Grade Required Courses:

Life Science
U.S. History
Math:
Students currently in Math 6 will go to Math 7.
Students currently in Accelerated Math 6/7 will go into Math 8 or Algebra 1.
**Students will NOT make Core selections, they will be automatically uploaded based on recommendations
Also Required:
Health and P.E.
Technology Education & Family and Consumer Science (one semester of each)
**All 7th graders will have 45 minutes of Resource or Spectrum**

6. 7th Grade Elective Courses
All 7th Graders will choose ONE 45 min Fine Arts Elective:
Band 7 (must be currently enrolled in Band 6)
Strings 7 (must be currently enrolled in Strings 6)
Chorus
Guitar 7
Art 7
All 7th Graders will choose ONE Core Elective:
Coding at the Middle School (CAMS)
Communication Studies
Exploratory Dramatics
Spanish 1, German 1, Latin 1, French 1 (high school credit)
(not all students should start World Language in 7th grade, but it is the only way to reach AP level by Senior year without summer school)
*Support Courses might be recommended by school and take place of the Fine Arts Elective

7. Rising 8th Grade Timeline
*Ms. Calderone and Ms. Armstrong met with students during FACS classes January 14th-January 29th to complete course requests and choose electives.
*Core Classes (Math, English, Science, Civics, PE and World Language- if currently enrolled in year 1) recommendations have been pre loaded into StudentVUE.
*All Civics Classes are at an Honors level
*Parents will have until February 8, 2019 to view and make changes to students electives via Student/ParentVUE. Instructions on how to make changes were sent via .

8. Required Courses-Grade 8

*Resource-all 8th graders are required to have a 90 minute Resource block every other day.
**Students who take Spectrum will have 45 minutes of Resource and 45 minutes of Spectrum

9. Grade 8 World Language
World Languages and Cultures Level I or II in: Spanish, German, Latin or French

10. Grade 8 Elective Choices
Students who are not taking a World Language will choose TWO of the following: Band 8 (if currently enrolled in Band 7) Strings 8 (if currently enrolled in Strings 7) Chorus (any student) Guitar Level 2 (if currently enrolled in Guitar 7) Communications (if did not take in 7th) Coding (if did not take in 7th) *Robotics (High School Credit Course) Technology Education Family and Consumer Sciences Art 8 3 Dimensional Design Art 8 (Must be enrolled in Art 7) Drama
Students who are taking a World Language will choose ONE of these electives

11. Summer Options
Some students decide to take a math course in the summer to accelerate their course work through Virtual Loudoun.
Detailed Information is provided to counselors in late April, and will be forwarded to parents at that time.
Typical cost approximately $700

12. Expunging Grades Any high school course taken during middle school.
Once expunged, the grade AND credit are gone.
Students would need to retake the course in order to receive credit or to move onto subsequent levels.
Expungement forms will be sent home with all Rising 8th and 9th grade FINAL report cards. Forms MUST be submitted to the Counseling Departments NO LATER than August 15, 2019:
Rising 9th Graders: Submit forms to FHS
Rising 8th Graders: Submit forms to JML (Mrs. Calderone/Mrs. Armstrong)

13. Advanced Studies Diploma
This is a change from 9

14. TJ/AOS/AET Timeline-8th grade year
The process to apply to these schools begins in the Fall of 8th grade.
AOS uses the PSAT as an admissions test-if your student requires accommodations you will need to start this process in August before school starts

Students must be enrolled in Algebra 1 or higher during their 8th grade year in order to apply to TJ/AOS. Students must be enrolled in Geometry or higher during their 8th grade year to apply to AET.
