Louisiana Purchase In1803, during Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, the US bought the Louisiana Territory from France. The USA doubled its land size. The Louisiana Purchase was an incredible deal for the United States, the final cost totaling less than five cents per acre at $15 million

Expedition Goals The goal of the expedition was to discover new information about the following: * geography * people * natural resources

Sacagawea The explorers traveled north up the Missouri River, traveling through the plains. Lewis and Clark met many Native Americans. A Shoshone woman named Sacagawea was very important to the journey. She helped the explorers communicate, gather food, and cross the mountains.

Route Taken by Lewis and Clark
In May 1804 the Lewis and Clark Expedition started from near St. Louis, Missouri. After crossing the Rocky Mountains, the explorers traveled through the Pacific northwest. Sacagawea continued with them, carrying her infant. They finally arrived at the Pacific Ocean in Nov They started their return in March 1806 and arrived in St. Louis the following September 1806.

Present states that were included in part or whole of the Louisiana Purchase were: Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.
