metals Are generally shiny when they are smooth & clean
They are solids at room temperature Good conductors of heat & electricity Malleable & ductile On periodic table, to the left of the metalloids Loses electrons to form positive ions Make up ¾ of all known elements Mostly found in group A & B elements

They are generally gases or brittle, dull- looking solids Poor conductors of heat and electricity Bromine is in a liquid state at room temperature, but the others are gases Gain electrons to form negative ions Highly reactive group 7A elements: halogens Extremely nonreactive group 8A elements: noble gases

metalloids Elements with chemical and physical properties of both metal and nonmetals They are located on the border “stair step” line on the periodic table Silicon and Germanium are the two most important and are mainly used in computer chips & solar cells
