1 1. Describe the changes in human population using this chart. 2
1. Describe the changes in human population using this chart Hypothesize why the population has recently grown so rapidly. (pop. Video)

2 Factors Forecasting Population Size
1. Age structure- the distribution of ages in a specific population at a certain time. Predict what a rapid declining population would look like?

3 Factors Forecasting Population Size
2. Survivorship- is the % of newborn individuals in a population that can be expected to survive to a given age. Type I-wealthy developed countries Type II-same death at all ages Type III- very poor populations. Many children die

4 Factors Forecasting Population Size
3. Fertility rate- is the number of births per year per 1,000 women of childbearing age (usually 15 to 44). Replacement level- average # children needed to replace their parents USA

5 Factors Forecasting Population Size
4. Migration- is any movement of individuals or populations from one location to another. Immigration- movement into an area Emigration- movement out of an area USA

6 Declining Death Rates The dramatic increase in Earth’s human population in the last 200 years due to death rates less than than birth rates. Reasons for death rate decline; Adequate food, Clean water, Safe sewage disposal, Vaccines

7 Life Expectancy Average worldwide life expectancy worldwide >67 years old. BUT Tuberculosis and AIDS are arising as populations become denser.

8 Stages of the Transition

9 Women and Fertility Birth rate decline factors: female education equals female economic independence. In the transition model, the lower death rate in second stage due to increased education. Educated women do not need to bear as many children to ensure a child’s survival. They also learn family planning techniques.

10 Women and Fertility Modern countries find parents work outside of home. If parents pay for child care, children may become a financial burden rather than an asset. Lower birth rates in both developed and developing countries.
