2 Text Organization Authors must organize information in the way that is easiest for readers to understand Four types of text organization: Sequence or Chronological Cause and Effect Compare and Contrast Problem and Solution

3 Sequence and Chronological
Sequence: passage lists ideas or information in the order in which they should; sometimes called logical order Examples: recipes, manuals, directions for playing a game Chronological: passage lists events in the order that they actually happened Examples: stories, news articles, history books, timelines Clue Words: after, before, during, finally, in the end, first, next, last, second, then, when, following, meanwhile, as soon as DO NOT WRITE EXAMPLES!!! WRITE THE CLUE WORDS!!!

Cause and Effect Passage identifies an event or situation and then discusses what happens because of it Clue Words: so, so that, since, because, if, reason, and as a result. Example: An earthquake struck the country of Haiti (cause) so people left the country (effect) DO NOT WRITE EXAMPLES!!! WRITE THE CLUE WORDS!!!

Compare and Contrast Passage looks at similiarities (compares) and differences (contrast) of two or more things Clue Words Similarities: both, also, like, likewise, too, compares, in comparison, to compare, resembles, similarly Differences: unlike, differs, in contrast, instead, despite, in spite, of, whereas, as opposed to Example: An article lists the similarities and differences between Mac and Dell computers DO NOT WRITE EXAMPLES!!! WRITE THE CLUE WORDS!!!

Problem and Solution Passage presents a problem and a likely solution(s) Clue Words: Problems, issue, dilemma, setback, obstacle, solution, fix, explanation Example: Campers at a particular campsite are always getting bitten by mosquitoes (problem). The camp advisors should equip campers with insect repellant (solution) DO NOT WRITE EXAMPLES!!! WRITE THE CLUE WORDS!!!

7 Summary Write a 1-2 sentence summary of the lesson
Be sure to include a explanation of text organization and list the 4 types of text organization authors use.

8 Finished?? Since you have completed the notes, you will practice with a few passages On the second page of your notes packet, you have some practice passages You will read each passage, underline any clue words, and identify the type of text organization
