Last class we explored the function and importance of lipids in the diets, we also evaluated what types of fats we ingest and how it affects our health. It is important to know how these macromolecules build and support our bodies, but it is also important to recognize how they influence our health. Quiz is coming up. Practice your material by studying!

Protein in Our Diets In a country that consumes far too much meat, it is important for students to understand the uses of proteins and the amounts that our bodies need to survive. It is also important to discuss the excess of meat that we consume and the impact it has on our bodies and the environment.

Article Explore We will read, and map through this article about protein consumption and its effects. Make a list of how much protein you should eat, the effects of too little protein and too much protein in the diet. How much should I eat? Effects of too little protein. Effects of too much protein.

Evaluate your Own Diet How much protein do you eat a day?
Think of one serving as the size of the palm of your hand. What non-meat products do you eat that can supply you with protein? Do you take any protein supplements? Why might people take protein supplements? Are they going to see any additional results?

Evaluate Low Carb Diets
What concerns may these protein high diets raise? Why might people on these diets misinterpret their weight loss?

What are we eating? Let’s evaluate the average American Diet…
Is the average American consuming a healthy diet? WHY OR WHY NOT? Be specific- mention types of sugars, types of fats and the amount of meat products.

What does the school feed you?
Compare your cafeteria options to what we now know a healthy diet looks like. What are they doing wrong? Why? Use examples and vocabulary from our readings and notes. What are they doing right? Why? Put your letters in a very friendly tone- use facts and logical argument to defend your position, inform but do not put down.

Anabolic- a process that builds substances into more complex ones Catabolic- a process that breaks substances into simpler ones Homeostasis- maintaining a stable, constant internal environment Feedback mechanism- the outcome of an event influences the future occurrences of that event Synthesis- a reaction where the product is a more complex substance than the reactants Decomposition- a reaction where a substance is broken into smaller, simpler substances.
