Starter Why was change to Education needed? What can you remember?

4 Context We have been looking at the Civil Rights Movement. Last lesson we looked at segregation, what can you remember? This lesson we are going to focus on one of the first events that occurred to try and gain Black Civil Rights. Over the next few lessons we will look at different people who made a difference to the lives of Black Americans.

5 Oliver Brown was a welder and an assistant pastor at St. Mark's A. M
Oliver Brown was a welder and an assistant pastor at St. Mark's A.M.E Church. Brown's daughter Linda, a third grader, had to walk six blocks to her school bus stop to ride to Monroe Elementary, her segregated black school one mile (1.6 km) away, while Sumner Elementary, a white school, was seven blocks from her house. Oliver wanted to challenge the laws surrounding Segregation. Read through Oliver’s story together.
